As parents, we naturally want to do everything we can to ensure our children are safe and living happy, productive lives. One of my greatest privileges as Legislator is to propose and approve legislature that helps achieve these goals. I am very proud to say that recently approved and/or submitted resolutions focus on protecting our youths:
• Established a website dedicated exclusively to anti-bullying. While schools practice many anti-bullying tactics, many parents whose children are being bullied aren’t clear about the schools’ processes. This new website will remedy that problem and provide related information. Please visit nassaustopbullying.org;
• Researchers have found bullied teens may be more likely to seek emotional solace in drugs. Narcan education and training sessions fellow legislators and I host supply citizens with opioid overdose reversal kits, while also citing reasons why people turn to highly addictive opioid painkillers or heroin;
• Banned sales of e-cigarettes, cigarettes and other tobacco products to anyone under 21. Certainly not a cure-all for bullying or the opioid epidemic, but studies have shown that nicotine addiction can lead to drug use beyond the fact that smoking is unhealthy in general;
• Approved development of a smartphone app to provide fast access to substance abuse resources. No family is invulnerable to a bullied child or opioid addiction. I encourage you to contact me with questions or comments on these or any other topic.
