During Women’s History Month, the Nassau County Legislature takes the opportunity to spotlight living women who deserve recognition for making an impact in the lives around them. Each legislator chooses a woman of distinction to represent their district as the Trailblazer Award honoree.

For 2012, Legislator Delia DeRiggi-Whitton will honor Laura Perfetti of Glen Cove.

“Laura Perfetti, a mother, teacher and fundraiser, has shown incredible strength, courage and creativity in the face of personal challenges. Her efforts serve as inspiration to all who need to put their own fears aside and focus on a goal, no matter how hard,” DeRiggi-Whitton said. “As a result of her dedication in facing hardship with a constructive agenda, she has brought grassroots fundraising to a new level in this district. Her tireless work with the Children’s Tumor Foundation has been a shining example of how to successfully raise contributions and awareness. Anyone who knows her and has watched her on the go can only be amazed and proud to know her.”

Laura has been involved with the Children’s Tumor Foundation since the Fall of 2008. Currently she is the Chapter President for New York and has been the Chapter President for Long Island since December of 2008. During that time, Laura has held a carnival for CTF every summer since 2009. Since 2008, Laura has raised almost $300,000 for the CTF.

Laura currently lives in Glen Cove with her husband Anthony and their four children, AJ, 12; Julia, 9; Jacqueline, 5; and Alexander, 3. Laura is a fourth-grade teacher at Syosset Central School District since 1998 prior to working in the Syosset School District she taught in the NYC Schools in Bushwick, Brooklyn. Laura hopes to change the face of Neurofibromatosis by raising awareness and critical funds to find a cure for this devastating disease.

The Trailblazer Award ceremony will take place at the Nassau County Legislature on March 19.
