‘Thank You for Saving a New Life’

Legislator DeRiggi-Whitton honors Robert Roper

Legislator DeRiggi-Whitton honored Robert Roper for saving a newborn baby.

It is no secret that saving people is part of Robert Roper’s life. The Glenwood man is an ambulance medical technician who has worked for Nassau County for 18 years. He has also been with the Glenwood Fire Company for 25 years, where he served as chief. His wife is a volunteer with the fire company and his dad was just recognized for 50 years of service.

Recently, Roper took up the call he often takes – to save a life. This time it was a brand new one. Roper was working in the ambulance and they were called to New Cassel. A woman had given a distressed birth and something was wrong. The emergency team was originally told that the baby was crying, but when they arrived at the home, they found a baby that was cold and blue and was not moving or breathing.

While most of us might freeze up, Roper moved right into action. He performed CPR, using just two fingers on the tiny baby. The newborn had to be transported into the ambulance where a special mask aided the resuscitation process.

Nassau County Legislator Delia DeRiggi-Whitton recently invited Roper into her Mineola office to hear about the experience and thank him for his service. Although he did not hesitate during the process of saving the baby’s life, he said that once it was all done, “You do get a very overwhelming feeling.”

The legislator thanked Roper and his family for their years of dedication as fire fighters and honored Roper for working so hard to save a new life that almost never began.

“This is far from the first time Robert Roper has come to the aid of someone in need in our county,” the legislator said. “I honor him and thank him for his years of bravery and for his willingness to take the call when a life is in danger.”
