Legislator Delia DeRiggi-Whitton had the pleasure of meeting some Port Washington veterans on Memorial Day. She was invited subsequently to visit the VFW before their regular meeting.

Delia was glad to get to know the veterans and thank them for serving their county. She also shared information about a pro bono veterans assistance program she is involved with:

Nassau County Legislator Delia DeRiggi-Whitton has announced a new way to say “thank you” to local veterans. She has arranged a new pro bono service with the law firm of Harris Beach that will assist veterans and their families with a variety of legal issues. These include wills, health proxies and medical filings. Help is also available on challenges like stalled claims, education, housing and healthcare.

“Our veterans gave everything for us, so it is so good to help give something back,” said Legislator DeRiggi-Whitton. “The work of attorney Keith Corbett has already made a tremendous impact on the life of one local veteran who had many problems getting benefits due to him. Keith solved it all quickly and I hope others will take advantage of his knowledge as well.”

That veteran, Howie Stillwagon, said he had major ongoing problems with pension and compensation claims. His paperwork was lost and he was getting nowhere.

“Thanks to Delia and Keith, the VA has really stepped things up now,” Stillwagon said. “They even called me about something I hadn’t put in for! So, there really is something going on now thanks to these efforts. I do appreciate that a lot.”
