Keep Going on West Shore Road

Open Letter to Nassau Administration – Keep Going on West Shore Road

Regarding West Shore Road’s repair, I am glad to see that the first of three phases is approaching completion and the road has been opened. The ordeal of a road closure has been an enormous burden on everyone, especially local businesses.

I do feel the need to say that, as an “active to extremely active” hurricane season is said to be rapidly approaching, I hope the compromised section of the road that was only patched will be monitored to ensure the patch is holding up. I fear that section will collapse again in heavy weather and the residents of Mill Neck, Bayville and the greater Oyster Bay / Glen Cove area will be confronted with the same inconvenience, losing the road all over again.

Along these lines, I encourage the Nassau County administration to actively move on “phase two of the work,” and fully repair the vulnerable section.

Further, I hope we can together push financial preparation for phase two. Although we are currently working out how to configure the capital budget, I am glad we are planning $9 million in 2014 for West Shore Road. Further, whatever reimbursements we get from the federal government for “phase one” should be reserved to help fund “phase two” and hopefully significantly reduce that cost.

If I can be of assistance moving repairs along, of course, I seek the opportunity to work together to serve Nassau’s taxpayers.
